Laurie: Okay, barbeque grills are being soaked, firecrackers have popped and fizzled, and the aftermath of Fourth of July is with us. It
occurs to me that we all should have taken time to celebrate the freedoms that we enjoy. If you didn’t, it’s still not too late. I for instance, can celebrate my freedom from the cable company. I finally got bundled (not quite as much fun as it sounds) and am now cable-company free. And my sentimental-but-still-working 1985 television suddenly has a zillion channels. I have to manually turn it on but I can suffer through almost anything. I can check out my Facebook and see who’s calling me on my television screen. The benefits are many. But, as with all of life, nothing is totally free. The calories that will remain on my body because I will never leave the couch are free but not necessarily good. And my phone bill, especially the first one, will be so complicated that I will need to dust off my college degree before I read it. But the cable company is history and I’m feeling free as a bird.
elizabeth: Speaking of feathers, I think about all the wildlife that is being killed (I guess saying “murdered” may seem too dramatic – although I do believe that is exactly what is happening) down in our gulf. Some people may cringe when they hear this, but some of these poor animals are being cooked alive while being trapped in the oil that is entering our coastlines. So I am not feeling the love of July 4th this year because of what is happening down there. It is hard to be free as a bird when your feathers are covered in oil. And now reports say that the oil is reaching the eastern coast of Florida. So does that mean we will see the Statue of Liberty lifting up her skirt to avoid the oil when it hits the East River?
Laurie: Janis Joplin (yes, I am dating myself) sang “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” I think I agree in theory but sometimes it’s good to lose things. Thing I would like to lose include weight, gray hairs, attitudes, my inability to pass by a sale, and a few of the people who are currently driving me crazy. No, elizabeth, that doesn’t include you. (She’s so paranoid.)
elizabeth: Here is an idea that got left behind in the sludge – an idea that could have changed the course of this disaster. Couldn’t some of those vacationers have gone to their vacation spots of choice and supported the small business owners who may not be there when this disaster gets under control? Was it really that important to get some sand in your bathing suits and forgo doing something patriotic like helping out some people who really need it? You don’t think for a sec that BP is compensating these people 100%? That is why I am seeing red and not the white and blue.
And I am not paranoid. Just totally pissed off .
