i couldn't agree more with all you've stated, elizabeth!

however, i do feel it was a missed (or misplaced) opportunity to attract, illuminate & educate women who may be on the fence or simply do not know. why? because time intentionally used a controversial image to stir the proverbial pot. they could have easily shot the same scenario while the child is laying down - which may have had a better chance of piquing one's curiosity rather than alienating those already disconnected from the reality that "Regardless of the size and shape, whether they are healthy or not, our breasts offer beauty and in some cases… life itself."

cheers from shana

Great blog Elizabeth. I have friends that subscribe to the attatchment parenting theory and their kids seem fine and plenty well adjusted. I could never parent like that, but I suppose they could never parent like me. Being different and raising your children in a way true to your heart - part of what makes the world so great (and so horrible) I suppose.

I do not have a problem with the cover and did not read the article, but I've read that the article is NOT about this woman at all, but about Dr. William Sears and his attachment parenting theory. Time magazine claims to be shocked by the negative feedback they are getting from this cover. I call bullshit on that. The hot mom is standing with an "F-U" look on her face, daring the world to say something to her. Well, right or wrong, the world is definitely saying something! Time Magazine got exactly what they were looking for - controversy and publicity.

And when this child enters school in 2 years, I don't know how any 5-year old would know that he was on the cover of Time Magazine drinking his mother's milk unless it was pointed out by a rabble rousing parent. That would be shameful indeed.

Funny, I was thinking the same thoughts as Nicole. I think if it was a baby in her arms she was cuddling and feeding, would be a completely different response. She looks like a yoga instructor who's mildly annoyed some kid got her by the nipple. And I do wonder if the kid will need therapy one day for being plastered all over the place like this. I didn't read the article, but are we SURE this is her kid and not a model? That would be really wrong! ;-)

Nicole - can we just hope that by the time this young boy starts school that we might be a little more tolerant towards public breastfeeding?
I am a little annoyed at Time for the type of shot they took. As per the mother, they coddle when she feeds her son - not standing up like that. It is not a beautiful mother and child shot to be sure.
I was surprised to hear from mothers who breastfeed (on another site where this was posted) for a few years and their kids seem happy and healthy, and that they would not do it any differently.
I think it is up to the mother and I know I was not breastfeed because I was born with a full set of teeth!
Thanks for your thoughts, elizabeth

my objection with this is not the nudity or celebration of womanhood -- it's two-fold -- and it has everything to do with her son (now and in the future).

i know this will get me a lot of guff. so be it. but once a kid's got teeth, stop breastfeeding. if it's really about the benefits of breast milk -- then pump and give it to them w/o breastfeeding. kids need to be weaned, off everything, at a certain point -- so they develop into independent adults. i do think in a certain way, this will hold a child back.

also, i question her ethics on revealing her son's image in such a public fashion. i understand she has a statement to make, whether i agree with it or not, but she's an adult -- her son is not. he doesn't understand the ramifications of appearing on a global magazine cover. and who's to say in the future he won't be embarrassed by this. much less the teasing that will ensue when he reaches school age. so, in that regard, i think her decision to get on the soapbox was a self-serving one.
